EARTHLY REMAINS EXHIBITION works
Since moving to Rotorua 4 years ago Miriam Ruberl has focused on painting with dry pigments by harvesting Volcanic Plateau clays, and exploring their responses to different methods of application, and to inks, a material that has held her interest for some 15 years now. Akin to her interest in local history and people generally, she is fascinated by how they got to be what and who they are today, and how they see themselves in relation to their experience. In her words, Miriam is really interested in "who are you, what are you made of, and what happened along the way "?
Her approach is to let the materials tell their own story. Once a piece is completed, her hope is that people recognize something of themselves and affirmation of their own life experience in what they see.
Miriam is a largely abstract painter working in a number of dry and wet media. Her main artistic interest, inspired by the approach of Richard Serra to his work, is in the materials themselves and how they respond to each other and a variety of processes.
